I am Yoshimura from the Department of Mathematical and Physical Science for Environments, Course of Functional Devices and Materials Science.

In March 2024, my research group included two international students from India (Mr. R and Ms. Swati) who enrolled in the PhD program using the “Government-sponsored International Student” system, two master’s students from an Indian university (Ms. A and Ms. Y) who stayed for six months using the “Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) Overseas Study Support System” system, one fourth-year undergraduate student (Ms. K) and one third-year undergraduate student (Mr. M) who enrolled in Akita University from China as a “privately-financed international student” and selected my research group. In addition, the photo below was taken in April 2024, and does not include Ms. K who has since graduated.

In research groups with foreign faculty members, there are often many international students (from the same country as the faculty member) who enrolled through the faculty member’s acquaintances. In such cases, the group is often naturally divided into Japanese group and foreign group. However, there are no foreign faculty members and staff members in my group, so there is no barrier between Japanese students and foreign students, and we conduct research as one team, despite being multinational. Students communicate closely with each other in their native language, Japanese, and English.

The international students are also doing a remarkable work. Mr. R published three scientific journals during the three years (in the PhD program), completed his PhD program in March 2024, and stayed in my research group as a postdoctoral researcher for seven months, before leaving for a postdoctoral position at the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Tsukuba. Ms. Swati has been in my research group for about a year, and she will soon be participating in an international conference in the United States (the most prestigious conference in my field of research) to present her research. After six months of research training in my group (international internship), Ms. A and Ms. Y left for a European university to enroll in the PhD program. Ms. K who completed her graduation project research and graduated from Akita University (my group) in March 2024, left for Sendai to enroll in the master’s program at the Graduate School of Engineering at Tohoku University. Mr. M, now a fourth-year undergraduate student, is very enthusiastically engaged in research activities.
